Matte black, in the sense this page covers, is a smooth board surface coloured black and finished in matte lamination, not the natural, textured look of a black kraft or corrugated material. That distinction matters at the quote stage, since the two start from different base materials rather than the same board with a different topcoat.
The trade-off worth knowing before ordering
A matte laminate gives a soft, low-glare finish that reads as understated and premium against a glossier alternative. That same softness is also what makes it show a scuff more readily than a gloss or soft-touch surface would, since a mark disturbs the low-glare finish in a way light catches easily. Black makes that more visible rather than less: on a patterned or lighter surface a small mark blends into the design, but a solid black panel has nothing else on it to draw the eye away from one. None of this makes matte black the wrong choice. It means handling and packing during fulfilment are worth planning around, since this finish shows wear if it’s knocked around carelessly in a way a busier design or a glossier surface wouldn’t. Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method.

Is there a finish that avoids the scuffing issue but keeps the black colour?
Gloss and soft-touch lamination are both available in black and neither shows a mark as readily as matte does, though each changes the look and feel of the surface in its own way rather than being a like-for-like swap.
Does printing or foil stamping on top of the matte black surface make it more prone to scuffing?
The printed or foiled area itself isn't more fragile than the surface around it. A raised foil edge can catch a knock in transit in a way a flat printed area doesn't, though, so it's worth flagging if the design places foil near a corner or edge.
Is a matte black mailer box recyclable?
An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally.
What is the minimum order for Matte Black Mailer Boxes?
Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval.
