A sleeve is the most economical way to put a brand on packaging, because it wraps something rather than replacing it. That makes it a different buy from a fully printed box, and the first thing to settle is what the sleeve is actually doing: dressing up something you already have, being the box itself, or fitting a specific product.
Branding something you already have
The most common use is a band or wrap around plain stock. A Belly Band Packaging strip is a narrow printed band that holds a box shut and carries the brand, and a fuller Custom Printed Packaging Sleeves or Cardboard Sleeve Packaging covers more of the box for more print area. Either way, the box underneath stays plain, so a single printed sleeve turns generic stock into something branded at a fraction of a full custom box.
A sleeve that is the box
Sometimes the sleeve is the whole packaging. A Custom Tray And Sleeve Boxes format is an inner tray that slides out of a printed outer sleeve, which gives a neat drawer-style open and a large branded surface without a lid or a tuck. It suits a product that is presented as it is drawn out, from a gift set to a retail item.
A sleeve for a specific product
Some sleeves are cut for one thing. Kraft Paper CD Sleeves hold a disc, Cardboard Bottle Sleeves wrap a bottle, and for food service a Burger Sleeve Packaging wrap or a Christmas Coffee Cup Sleeves band does the branding and the holding at once. These sleeves touch food directly, so the material is chosen with that in mind. Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production.
The board the sleeve is cut from
A sleeve can be cut from natural kraft, a white or coated paperboard, or a heavier cardboard, and the choice shapes both the look and the feel. Kraft gives a recycled, understated look and mutes a printed colour a little. A white or coated paperboard holds a brighter, sharper print. A heavier cardboard suits a sleeve that has to take some handling, such as one that wraps a bottle or forms the outer of a tray-and-sleeve. The board is matched to the product and the look you are after.
Finishing that lands on the sleeve
Because the sleeve is the only part that is printed, any finish put on it carries the whole impression of the pack. A matt or gloss lamination changes how the band feels in the hand and how the colour reads. A foil, emboss, deboss or spot-UV highlight can lift a logo or a title without printing the box underneath. These finishes depend on the material and the artwork, so the right combination is confirmed for the specification rather than assumed for every sleeve.
When a sleeve, and when a box
A sleeve earns its place when the box underneath can stay plain and one printed band does the branding, which covers most jobs. Where the pack has to be printed on every face, fully enclose the product, or seal shut on its own, a fully printed box is the better buy, and that is Custom Product Boxes. Deciding that first stops you paying for a sleeve when a box is what the job needs, or the reverse.
Printing and ordering
Print runs from a single logo to a full wrap, in offset, digital or screen printing to suit the design and the run. Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method. Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free. UK delivery is free. There are no setup fees. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally.

Belly band or a full sleeve, which do I need?
If the brand needs to do real work on the shelf, the fuller sleeve gives the print area for it; if it is a finishing touch that just secures the box, a belly band is enough. The band uses less material, so it is the cheaper of the two.
Do I supply the plain box, or do you?
Either works. A sleeve can wrap stock you already hold, or we can make the plain box or tray to go with it so the two fit together. Only the wrap is printed, which is what keeps a sleeve below the cost of a fully printed box.
Can a sleeve fit a box I already have?
Yes. A sleeve is sized to the box it wraps, so send the box's dimensions or a sample, and it is cut to slide on cleanly and stay put without a struggle to fit.
Are the food sleeves safe against food?
Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. Confirming any information printed on the sleeve remains your business's responsibility, or that of its adviser.
