A pinched or gusseted top closes a bag; it does nothing to keep the bag upright once popcorn goes in. A flat, folded and sealed base does both jobs. It holds the top shut, and it opens into its own rectangular footprint under the fill’s own weight. That footprint is what lets the bag stand on a counter or table between handfuls, without a tray or a hand underneath it.
The base seam is also where grease collects first
That fold is glued into a seam under whatever’s inside, making it the first point of contact for any oil or butter working its way down through the fill. Grease resistance, available depending on the specification, works hardest exactly at that seam, since that’s the first place oil actually reaches the paper. Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. A base that has picked up oil in normal use doesn’t recycle the same way a clean, dry one does. Whether your local paper stream still takes it depends on the area and the finish chosen. Checking locally settles that either way.
A flat face prints differently to a gusseted one
Because the base folds flat instead of pleating inward, the bag’s front and back panels sit as clean, unbroken surfaces, with no side gussets breaking up either one. That gives a logo, event branding or a printed pattern a full, uninterrupted panel to print on. Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method.

The first iterations the boxes were sized wrong, but once we got it figured out and I got the art I requested some samples before moving forward. They printed off some samples, and they were great minus a slight adjustment to the perforation. They made the adjustment and got the final order out and so far I am pleased with the quality, especially for the price. The only thing that would have bumped this up to a 5 star review would have been a little bit quicker overall experience, part of which was my fault.

Does the flat base print differently to the front and back panels of the bag?
It can be included in the same run as its own panel, since it's a separate, flat surface once the bag is formed. Mention it at the quote stage if branding needs to appear there too, rather than only on the front and back.
Is a flat-bottom bag stronger than a bag with a pinched or gusseted top?
It carries fill more predictably, which isn't quite the same thing as being stronger. The flat base spreads the weight across its own footprint instead of concentrating it at a single pinch point, and that's most of why it stays upright once it's filled.
Are Flat Bottom Popcorn Bags recyclable?
An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally.
