A bike box is sized to the bike as it is packed, not as it is ridden. A built bike rarely goes into a box whole. Usually the front wheel comes off, the handlebar is turned sideways or taken off the stem, the pedals are removed and the seat post goes down. Each of those changes the length, height or depth the box has to be, which makes how far the bike is taken apart the decision to settle before anything else.

How much comes off

That decision is a trade. Take more off and the box gets shorter and easier to send, although the weight inside stays much the same because every removed part still travels with the bike. The person who opens it then has more to put back together, and every part that comes off needs a place of its own inside. Leave more on and the rider unpacks something close to rideable, in a bigger box. A shop mechanic refits a wheel and a set of bars in minutes, so bikes going to dealers can often travel more dismantled than bikes going straight to a first-time rider. Whichever way it goes, the box is drawn around the result.

Keeping the loose parts off the frame

Once parts come off, the risk inside the box changes. A loose front wheel riding against the frame on a courier journey is how a disc rotor gets bent or a rear derailleur gets knocked out of line. Those two stick out from the bike and do not take a knock well. Die-cut corrugated fitments give the wheel its own slot beside the frame and hold the frame still, which keeps the loose wheel held apart from the rotor and derailleur on the journey. How those fitments are specified in general is set out in Custom Insert Boxes.

Carrying a box this long

A packed bike makes a long, heavy box that somebody has to lift into a van and carry to a door. Hand holes cut into the ends give two people something to grip. Single-wall and double-wall board are both available, chosen to the bike’s weight and the journey. Length brings its own strain on the walls, which is worked through for long boxes in long cardboard box 1200mm.

The printed outside

The long side panels give a brand plenty of room, and the same outside can carry the marks that help the box arrive the right way up, such as which end is the top. Offset, digital and screen printing are all offered, and which one fits depends on the quantity and the artwork. For boxes built to other proportions, the full range is in Cardboard Boxes.

Product FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about ordering, artwork, production, materials and delivery.

What is the minimum order for a Cardboard Bike Box?

Orders start from 100 units. The minimum applies to each box design, so a range that needs several box sizes needs 100 of each size, not 100 across them all.

Will one bike box fit road, mountain and children's bikes?

Rarely well. Wheel size, frame size and handlebar width all change the packed shape, so a box sized for one type leaves a large bike short of room or a small one loose inside. That is why each type is usually boxed to its own size.

Are Cardboard Bike Boxes recyclable?

An unlaminated corrugated box may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a laminated one. Print coverage, tape and any plastic wrap packed inside all affect what happens to it after the bike is out. We can explain the general recyclability considerations of the selected material and finishing options, so you can make accurate claims on your own packaging.

What is included in the price, and when are the boxes ready?

Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free. There are no setup fees. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
