A mailing tube carries something that travels best rolled: an art print, a poster, an architect’s plan, a map, a certificate that should not be folded, or a length of fabric. The tube is wound from layers of kraft board, which shows on the plain samples as spiral lines running along the outside, and it is closed at both ends.
How tightly the sheet is rolled
The diameter decides how tightly the sheet has to curl to fit. Rolled into a narrow tube, a sheet is wound tight and tends to keep that curl once it is taken out, and heavier paper and art prints hold it most stubbornly. A wider tube lets the same sheet roll more loosely, so it lies flat again more readily. Going much wider than the roll needs has its own drawback, because the roll can loosen and move about inside. Several sheets rolled together make a thicker roll than one, so the diameter is chosen for the full roll that goes in.
Fabric and other soft rolls
A length of fabric behaves differently from a print. It does not hold a curl the way paper does, so it can be rolled more firmly and still lie flat when it is unrolled. What matters more is that a soft roll can unwind inside the tube, so a roll that is tied or banded before it goes in keeps its shape.
Room at each end
Most of the samples have white caps that push into the ends and sit just inside the rim, and one long tube closes with a short end section finished in a metal-rimmed disc. Either way, the closure takes up some of the length. The tube is therefore cut longer than the rolled sheet is wide, leaving a little room at each end so the edges of the sheet are not pressed against the caps. The cap material is agreed with the rest of the specification.
Plain kraft or printed
All four samples are plain kraft, and a shipping label can go anywhere along a plain tube. A printed tube is wrapped in printed paper over the winding, so a logo or a full design runs around the whole outside. On a printed tube, a clear panel kept free in the design gives the label somewhere to go. Offset, digital or screen printing is used for the wrap, depending on the specification and the quantity. What is the minimum order for mailing tubes?

Should a print be wrapped before it goes in the tube?
It can help. A sheet of plain paper rolled around the print keeps its printed surface off the inside wall of the tube while it travels.
Are mailing tubes recyclable?
An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative.
