Most people arrive here looking for a number: how much a gallon bag takes. The gallon is already that number, and it measures room instead of contents, so it stops just short of the thing you came to find out. Your own product is what closes that gap, and this page spends most of its time there.
What a 1 gallon mylar bag holds, and what decides it
A gallon of space weighs nothing until you fill it, and then your product decides. Dense free-flowing goods, the rice, sugar, salt and flour end of a store cupboard, settle tightly and make a heavy bag. Bulkier goods sit loosely, trap air between the pieces and fill the same gallon at a fraction of that weight. Two brands can order the identical bag and walk away with very different pack weights and a very different pallet.
There is a second wrinkle in the unit that nobody on this term mentions. A gallon is not one volume: an imperial gallon is about 4.5 litres and a US gallon about 3.8. That difference is wide enough to matter if your fill sits anywhere near the top of the bag, so confirm which gallon a quote is built on, ours included.
So the first question back from us is about the contents before it is about the size. Weigh out what you intend to put in one bag and send us that figure. The gallon then stops being a guess at either end, and a correction at that stage costs nothing, where a correction after a run costs the run. That assumes a trade order: these are made to order in quantity and printed with your own artwork, so a cupboard’s worth of bags with oxygen absorbers thrown in is better bought from a shop.
Mylar names a material, not a level of protection
Mylar is a trade name for a polyester film, and on its own it tells you very little. What does the work is the construction around it. Polyester film, which is what mylar is, aluminium foil, and PE and PP layers are each available, depending on the product and the specification, with any barrier construction settled for that order. All Custom Packaging works that construction out with you, so the film is chosen around the contents and how they will be stored. A bag built with a metallised or foil layer behaves differently from a clear single-layer one.
The visible part of that choice is easy to weigh up. A clear bag shows the contents, and light reaches them too. A metallised or foil build is not see-through, so the view goes and far less light reaches what is inside. Film gauge pulls in the same direction: a heavier film resists puncture and handles more stiffly, a lighter one creases more easily and costs less. We publish no gauge for this product. The gauge belongs to the specification, and what a given construction actually holds out is confirmed against that specification instead of promised in advance.
Closing it, and the air you seal in
How the bag closes is a separate decision from what it is made of, and on a storage bag it often matters more. A resealable zip suits a pack that gets opened and closed over weeks. A bag filled once and left alone has no use for one, and a zip nobody reseals is a cost with no job attached. A resealable or zip closure is available, settled alongside the rest of the specification.
Then there is the air. A bag is the layer around the contents, and it does not remove what gets sealed in with them. How much air stays inside is decided by how full the bag is and how it is closed, and both of those happen at your end. If oxygen absorbers are part of your process, say so early, because that changes the headspace you want and sometimes the size you order.
Printing on a film rather than a board
A bag is close to one large printed face, which makes print a bigger part of the decision here than it is on a box. A single mark or a whole-bag design are both workable, in offset, digital or screen printing. Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method. The film is one of those variables. A brand colour that sits confidently on a white face will read differently on a clear or metallic one, which is worth seeing before the run.
Design support is free. Our designers build the artwork to the bag instead of squeezing it on. A digital 3D mock-up is free. On a format this simple it answers one question in particular: where do the seal and any zip eat into the area you thought you had. The approved specification and artwork stay on file too, so a reorder can be set against the version you already signed off.
Orders start from 100 units. The minimum applies per design, so two labels in the same size count as two lots. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free. There are no setup fees.
Food-contact suitability and where the responsibility sits
Where the bag holds food, the material has to suit that food, and that is settled on the material itself. Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. The pack’s wording is a different question with a different owner. Confirming any information printed on the bag remains your business’s responsibility, or that of its regulatory adviser. What we can do is leave honest room for it. An ingredient list, an allergen statement, a weight or a batch code gets planned into the layout, instead of being wedged into whatever space the design left over.
When this is not the right bag
A gallon is a bulk size, not a shelf size. It holds a quantity for storing or moving, and a retail portion inside one looks exactly like a retail portion inside a bag built for ten of them. If you are packing by portion, the weight-based sizes are the right end of the family: 1 Pound Mylar Bags and 1kg Mylar Bags are specified the way a retail pack usually is, and Small Mylar Bags covers the smallest units.
A bag has no shape of its own. It takes the form of whatever is inside it, it will not stack squarely, and it gives nothing at all to a product that has to arrive undented. Where the pack has to hold its form on a shelf or be opened as part of the experience, that is a carton, and Custom Food Boxes covers those formats. Plenty of brands run both, with the bag doing the containing and the box doing the presenting.

What is the minimum order for 1 Gallon Mylar Bags?
Orders start from 100 units. On a gallon bag that is worth pausing over, because a hundred of them is a hundred gallons of product to fill, which is a much bigger commitment than a hundred small retail pouches. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
We already store in buckets. Does the bag add anything?
They do two different jobs. The bucket takes the knocks, the stacking and the handling, and the bag is the layer sitting around the contents inside it, which is why the two are so often used together. What that layer holds out depends on the film and foil specified for it, so the construction follows from what you are storing and how long it has to sit there.
Can I order 1 Gallon Mylar Bags without printing?
Yes, through a different line. Blank Mylar Bags is the unprinted, ready-to-go route, and because that is stock rather than a print run, what is available and how soon it ships is confirmed with your quote.
Are 1 Gallon Mylar Bags recyclable?
Not straightforwardly, and it is better to hear that now. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. A mylar bag sits at the far end of that comparison: a multi-layer film, often with foil in it, which kerbside paper collections are not built to handle. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally. If recyclability is driving the brief, raise it before the construction is settled.
