Cut a window into a white box and the cut edge all but disappears. Cut the same window into kraft, and that edge stays visibly, warmly brown, because there is no coating there to hide it.
What kraft does to a window that white board doesn’t
A window needs a film patch or a die-cut aperture, and that choice affects both cost and recyclability. Whichever route it takes, the opening itself exposes the board immediately around it, and on kraft that exposed edge is the same natural brown as the rest of the box, not a white or printed surface. The result is a product framed in kraft’s own colour rather than sitting behind a border that tries to disappear. For a natural, handmade or artisan product, that brown frame usually reads as part of the presentation rather than against it.
There is no fixed window shape or size. It’s set around how much of the product actually earns its place on show, a different answer for a single soap bar than for a stack of stationery, worked out against the product rather than assumed in advance.
Finish, film and the ordering basics
Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method. That covers any print sitting alongside the window on the same box. The board around the window can still take a finish where the specification calls for it: lamination, foil, or an embossed or debossed detail. Weigh a heavier finish against the plain, natural look that’s usually the whole reason for choosing kraft in the first place.

When this is not the right box
If the product’s own colour needs to read bright and precise right to the window’s edge, kraft’s brown frame works against that. Starting from a white or coated board instead is the better call there. The first iterations the boxes were sized wrong, but once we got it figured out and I got the art I requested some samples before moving forward. They printed off some samples, and they were great minus a slight adjustment to the perforation. They made the adjustment and got the final order out and so far I am pleased with the quality, especially for the price. Does the brown edge around the window look like a defect rather than a design choice?
Not once it's expected. A clean, evenly die-cut edge on kraft reads as a deliberate natural frame, the same way a rough linen border reads as texture rather than a flaw. If a soft edge would read wrong for your product, a coated white board window is the more neutral alternative.
Can the window be printed around, or does printing avoid it?
