An inflated balloon is large, light, easily crushed and completely unwilling to be squashed down to fit. That combination is what decides the box around it: how big it has to be, what the board is actually doing, and what it will cost you to send.
It is worth being clear what the product is, because most pages selling it are not. This is a box built to hold one inflated balloon, usually a clear bubble balloon with a topper or a tassel, assembled and filled by the sender and opened as a surprise. It is a presentation format, and not a way of packaging balloons for sale. To be plain about what we supply: this is the box on its own. We do not sell balloons, we do not inflate anything, and we do not send finished gifts to recipients. If that is what you are after, a balloon gifting service will serve you better than a box manufacturer.
Sizing to the balloon you will actually inflate
The number printed on a balloon packet is not usually the size you end up with. That figure describes the balloon at full inflation, and in practice most are filled a little softer than that, so the diameter you actually have to box is smaller and varies with how hard it was filled. Then add whatever sits on top: a topper, tassel or ribbon adds height above the balloon itself, and it is the part most likely to be crushed if the box is cut to the balloon alone. So the figure that sets the box is the width of a balloon you have really inflated, plus the topper.
That sounds obvious and it is routinely got wrong. It is worth checking any supplier’s size list against a balloon you have actually inflated, because a size ladder borrowed from a general gift-box range will look generous on paper and still be too small in practice.
One more reversal to be aware of. A balloon wants a little clearance, not a snug fit, which is the opposite of most packaging. There is no insert here and there should not be. Holding a balloon still is not the problem; giving it room without letting the box collapse around it is.
So the honest answer on sizing is that we build to your balloon rather than asking you to pick from a list.
Board, and why the usual reasoning barely applies
The board grade is chosen around the weight of the filled product and how far it travels. On this product the first half of that almost drops out, because a filled balloon box weighs little more than an empty one. What is left is the journey, and it is doing all the work. A tall box with nothing solid inside gets no help holding its own shape. Nothing is pushing back against the walls, so the board and the structure carry the whole job of staying square in a stack and surviving handling. That is what the specification is chosen for here, and it is a different reason from the one that applies to almost everything else we make.
Materials run to paperboard, kraft, corrugated or rigid. Printing is offset, digital or screen printing. The finishing options are matt and gloss lamination, foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV, and which of them apply follows the specification you settle on. A die-cut window is an option where the balloon should show without the lid coming off, and the film for it is chosen with the specification. Inside printing is worth a thought on this format in particular, because the inside of the lid is in view for the whole of the reveal.
Boxes can be supplied flat and assembled when you need them, which is the route that suits how this product is actually used, or made up if you would rather. The balloon is inflated first, the box goes together around it, and it is closed and handed over. Flat supply matters more here than on most products, because a box that is mostly void takes up the same shelf space empty as full. We keep the approved dieline and specification on file, so when the same box comes back round the next birthday season it is matched to what was signed off last time instead of being set up again.
Orders start from 100 units. Each design carries that minimum on its own, so a second size or a second print run counts separately. Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free. There are no setup fees. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
When this is not the right box
The box does not keep the balloon up. How long a balloon holds its float is a property of the balloon, its fill and its seal, and no carton slows the gas escaping through it. Any supplier telling you their box maintains a helium balloon in position is describing the balloon’s behaviour and taking credit for it. Plan around your balloon supplier’s guidance, and fill close to the moment the box is given or sent.
A big light parcel is not a cheap parcel. Carriers price on the room a parcel takes up, not only on the scales, so a balloon box is close to the worst case: large, and full of nothing at all. That is not a reason to avoid the format, but it is worth pricing carriage before you commit to a size, because the difference between two box heights can show up in every single delivery.
Where these are going out by courier week in week out, you are buying for what happens in transit, and not for the few seconds of opening it, which points at a different build altogether. What size box do I need for my balloon?
Measure a balloon you have actually inflated, across its widest point, and add whatever sits on top. If you use more than one balloon size, standardise the box on the largest of them. A smaller balloon in a slightly roomy box is fine and the reverse is not, so one box across the range usually beats a size for each.
Will the balloon stay up inside the box?
That is down to the balloon rather than the carton. Float time comes from the balloon material, the fill and the seal, and no box extends it. Ask your balloon supplier how long theirs holds, then work backwards from the moment it needs to be opened.
Are they sent flat, or made up?
Usually flat, and for this product that is normally what you want. You inflate the balloon first, assemble the box around it and close it, which is not something you can do with a box that arrives made up. Pre-assembled supply is available if you would rather have it that way, but it rarely suits this format for that reason. Flat supply also costs less to get to you, because a made-up balloon box is mostly air, and carriers charge for the space a parcel takes up as well as what it weighs.
Can I have a window so the balloon shows?
Yes. A die-cut aperture with a clear film is an option, settled at the same time as the material and finish. It does change the recycling picture, so decide it early and not at the end.
Are One Balloon Boxes recyclable?
That is decided by the material and the finishing you choose. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally. A window film is the usual complication. Tell us if recyclability matters to you and we can go through what each option does to it.
