The holes in a vented pizza box are there for the steam a hot pizza gives off in the first minutes after it leaves the oven. How trapped steam softens crisp food is set out under white takeaway boxes. On a pizza box the decisions that are left are practical ones: which panels the holes go in, how many there are, and what they do to the print.
In the walls, not the lid top
On our vented boxes the holes are cut into the walls of the box, most often the back wall along the hinge, and never into the flat top of the lid. The lid top is the surface that gets covered in service. Pizza boxes are stacked on the counter and stacked again for the journey, and a hole in the lid top is closed off by the box sitting on it. A hole in a wall stays open whatever is stacked above. The lid top is also the main printed face, and leaving it whole keeps the design uninterrupted.
How many
The number follows the pizza and the trip. A pizza with wet toppings, such as plenty of vegetables or fresh tomato, gives off more steam than a plain one. A longer delivery keeps that steam shut in with the base for longer. Both point towards more venting, while a box that only ever carries a plain pizza a few minutes to a customer waiting at the counter needs less. Tell us what you cook and how far it travels, and the number and position are set to suit.
What vents do to the artwork
Vents are holes through the wall panels, so anything printed there has to be laid out around them. Keep phone numbers, web addresses and small text clear of where the holes fall, or a vent will take a letter out of the middle of a word. The mock-up shows the holes over your design before anything is printed.

What is the minimum order for Vented Pizza Boxes?
What is the minimum order for Vented Pizza Boxes? Orders start from 100 units. That minimum applies to each printed design, so tell us each design and size you need and the quote is built around them.
Can vents be added to any size of pizza box?
Vents are die-cut along with the box itself, so they can be specified on the sizes we make, with their number and position set to that size.
Will oil or sauce run out through the side vents?
The holes sit up in the wall, above the base, so oil lying on the base of the box sits below them while the box is carried flat. A box tipped on its side in transit is a different matter.
Are Vented Pizza Boxes recyclable?
The vents themselves change nothing. Corrugated board with no plastic laminate may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams, though grease soaked into the board and the facilities available locally both affect what happens to a used box. We can explain the general recyclability considerations of the selected material and finishing options, so you can make accurate claims on your own packaging.
What comes with an order, and how long does it take?
Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free. There are no setup fees. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
