A standard cupcake box is built around the cake, not the decoration on top of it. Pipe a tall buttercream swirl or add a topper, and a 2 to 3 inch box lid presses straight down onto it before the lid even clicks shut. Four inches of depth is the extra headroom that stops that happening.
The cupcake itself rarely needs the extra space. The frosting and any topper do. A tall swirl, a fondant piece, or a decoration standing above the cake case can easily reach two inches above the Deep Cupcake Boxes‘s base, and a shallow box simply has nowhere for that height to go. If your decoration is taller than that, check the actual height against the box before ordering, since 4 inches solves the common case but not every possible topper.
These Biscuit Packaging Boxes are usually specified by how many cupcakes they hold. Single, 4, 6 and 12-hole layouts are the common choices, and each is available depending on the specification. A die-cut insert holds each cupcake in its own position, so cakes do not slide into each other and smear their frosting against a neighbour during transport.
A window in the lid lets a customer see the decoration before opening the box, which matters most for a retail shelf or a gift order. A solid printed lid protects the decoration from light and dust entirely, which suits a delivery order where the box will not sit on display before it is opened.
Board and coating can be selected to suit direct or indirect food contact depending on the specification. Food-contact material suitability should be confirmed for the exact cake and any filling, and allergen and nutritional labelling remain the responsibility of your business.

Production is assigned according to the box structure, materials, quantity and finishing requirements agreed for the order.
An unlaminated kraft or paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. A plastic window or heavy lamination will change that, so recyclability depends on the full make-up of the box you choose. We can walk you through the considerations for your specification.
