“Cardboard food tray” is a wider phrase than it looks. Search it and the results include an open snack tray from a market stall, a compartmented tray and a tray with a drink holder built in. They also include a retail display tray for something that is not food, and a lidded container that is a box by any other description.

Nothing closes over the top. That is the whole distinction, and it is the one the phrase hides.
What decides the board
The board grade is chosen around the weight of the filled product and how far it travels. On an open format that is most of the material conversation, because there is no closure, window or liner to specify alongside it.
None of load, grease, moisture or heat is rated on these boards, so no figure is offered for any of them. Two things this page also does not publish are a size range and a board weight, neither of which is confirmed. Both get set against your product instead of picked off a list.
Food-contact suitability and where the responsibility sits
Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. The artwork layout can reserve clear panels for the information the product is required to display. All Custom Packaging can help organise the available print space, but the brand or its regulatory adviser remains responsible for confirming the accuracy and completeness of the required product information.
An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally.

I was very pleased with my experience and final product with ACP UK! My rep Daniel was so helpful and understanding through the entire process and my final boxes are very good quality. The design process was easy, production was fast, and my boxes arrived much quicker than I was expecting. Thomas has been a delight to work with from start to finish, responding to my many questions and requests. He worked well with my graphic designer to get us a gorgeous luxury packaging product for our premium fudge product. Whenever there was an issue, he was there to walk through it with us and ensure it resolved. ETAs were not consistent but when multiple parties are involved in getting the packaging to us I suppose some delays are bound to occur.

Does this tray come with a lid?
No. Some suppliers sell lidded versions under the same name, so it is worth checking what you are being quoted for, because a lid changes the specification and the price.
Can the tray have compartments?
A die-cut insert can be shaped around what sits on the tray, which keeps items apart and stops them wandering. It is doing that job alone, since there is no lid pressing down from above.
Will it take a hot or greasy portion?
Nothing here is rated for grease, moisture or heat, so that is not a promise this page makes. Tell us what the tray carries and we will say what can be specified.
What do the free services cover?
Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free. There are no setup fees.
What is the minimum order for cardboard food trays?
Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
