A box’s lid can carry the branding on its own, seen before anything inside is visible. An open tray doesn’t have that layer. The surface itself does the branding job the moment it’s handed over, uncovered from the start.
What going without a lid actually trades away
Speed and visibility are the appeal: food handed over or displayed straight from the tray, nothing to unseal first. In exchange, the material itself picks up work a lid would otherwise share, since nothing else in the structure is holding the fill in place. One supplier’s own case study describes exactly this going wrong: a bakery’s takeaway trays buckling once loaded with something hot and heavy, fixed only once the construction itself was upgraded. It’s one account, not a market-wide statistic, but it illustrates the mechanism plainly: an open tray under a demanding fill needs the board choice to be a genuine decision, not a default. I will say that there were some things about our final product that we were not happy with, such as creasing of the graphics and images were not full bleed on the cover of our boxes like they were supposed to be. Thomas was helpful and knowledgeable and very accommodating in changing design details, always responding quickly with a new version to review. Thomas is very eager to help make sure your packaging is right for you. Sometimes a little too eager chasing for decisions but at least you know someone is handling your enquiry and its not sitting on the bottom of a pile being ignored as I've had experience of elsewhere.
Product takes about 3 weeks to be delivered so can't comment on actual product as yet.

Why choose a tray instead of a box with a lid?
A tray shows the food and lets it move from hand to counter in one step. A lidded box adds a layer between the two, useful for a longer trip but not for a quick handover.
Will an open tray hold up under a hot or heavy portion?
Corrugated stock is the sturdier default for that kind of fill. For the fuller picture, including when rigid stock is or isn't worth its higher cost, see Hot Dog Trays.
Does it matter that there's no lid to print on?
It means there's only one design decision to make, not two. Send over what you'd normally put on a lid and we'll work out how it fits across the open face instead.
Can I get a premium finish on a tray, like foil or spot UV?
Gloss, matte, spot UV and foil are all available depending on the specification, an open tray included.
What is the minimum order for custom printed food trays?
Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
