A macaron’s shell is thin and easily chipped, and a box full of loose macarons sliding against each other in transit does more damage than most people expect. An insert exists to stop that specific problem, though a delicate bakery product can run into plenty of others it has no bearing on.
What a cavity insert controls
Cut to the macarons’ own dimensions, the insert sits inside a standard tuck-end or auto-lock box and holds each macaron in its own cavity, so nothing can slide, roll or knock against its neighbour. That controls movement, which is the main real risk in transit and handling. It is not a shock-absorption system, and it will not stop a shell cracking if the box itself is dropped or crushed. A supplier that promises the insert alone guarantees a perfect delivery is promising more than a piece of die-cut card can actually deliver.
The confirmed materials: card, foam or paperboard
Card gives a crisp, precise cavity edge and prints well if the insert itself is visible when the box opens. Foam adds a little give, which suits a heavier or more textured shell. Paperboard sits between the two, a common middle choice. All three are confirmed here. A moulded plastic tray or a pulp-moulded insert, offered by some suppliers, is not a specification we’ve confirmed, so say so directly if that’s genuinely what you need.
The second job an insert does
A mixed box, several flavours or colours in the same order, needs the insert for a second reason beyond stopping movement: keeping shells that would otherwise touch from transferring colour or picking up a neighbour’s filling. Each cavity holds one macaron, so a raspberry shell next to a pistachio one never actually makes contact. This matters more on a mixed or gift-style order than on a single-flavour bulk run, where every macaron is the same anyway. A small gift box of four or six and a larger sharing box of a dozen or more both use the same cavity approach; only the layout and how many rows fit change between them.
Where a fitted insert stops mattering as much
Bulk kitchen orders are the case where a fitted insert often isn’t worth it. Staff plating up a large, single-flavour catering order handle it differently to an individual customer opening a retail or gift box, so the same cavity protection matters less. A simpler bulk specification without a matched insert is worth asking about if that’s closer to your order.
What’s confirmed before it touches a macaron
Board and coating can be selected to suit direct or indirect food contact depending on the specification. Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. That applies to the insert as well as the outer box, since the macaron usually sits directly against both. Allergen and nutritional labelling stays your business’s responsibility.
Specifying the order
Orders start from 100 units. Design support is free. That covers fitting the cavity layout to your box dimensions before anything is cut. A digital 3D mock-up is free. Checking the insert layout against the print at that stage catches a mismatch before it becomes a cutting die. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free. There are no setup fees. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally. A card or paperboard insert generally follows the same recycling logic as the box itself; a foam insert is a separate material worth asking about directly.

They made the adjustment and got the final order out and so far I am pleased with the quality, especially for the price. Does the insert guarantee the macarons arrive undamaged?
inside the box, which is the main real risk in transit, but it cannot guarantee against a dropped parcel or rough handling before the box reaches you. Treat it as reducing that risk, though it can't remove it entirely.
Can I get a plastic tray insert instead of card?
Not as standard. Inserts here are die-cut card, paperboard or foam. A moulded plastic or pulp tray is common elsewhere in the market, but it is not a confirmed option here, so ask directly if that's specifically what you need.
Can different flavours or colours go in the same box?
Yes. Each cavity holds one macaron separately, so different shells never actually touch, which is what stops colour transfer or a mixed box looking messy by the time it's opened.
What is the minimum order for macaron boxes with inserts?
Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
Do I need a fitted insert for a large wholesale order?
Not always. Staff plating up a large, single-flavour catering or wholesale order don't need the same cavity protection an individual customer's retail or gift box does. Tell us the order type and we can talk through whether a simpler bulk specification suits it better.
