Somewhere in a stack of two hundred identical printed boxes are the four vegetarian ones. Service starts shortly. Nobody wants to open boxes to find them, and the person holding the tongs has never seen this order before.
Finding the four vegetarian ones
That is the problem a catered Christmas lunch actually presents, and it is solved at artwork stage or not at all.
A box that looks beautiful and identical to every other box is harder to serve than a plain one with a clear mark on the lid. The artwork layout can reserve clear panels for the information the product is required to display. On a boxed event lunch that panel earns its place twice over: it carries what the meal has to declare, and it is what somebody reads at arm’s length across a trestle table while a queue waits.
Size the marker for that second job. A block of colour or a single printed word will carry across a table; a small mark tucked into a busy festive design will not. The usual reason this goes wrong is that artwork gets approved zoomed in, where everything is legible.
There is a second decision behind it. Printing the variant fixes it at production; leaving that area clear takes a label applied on the day. Menus change late and headcounts change later, so print where the menu is settled and leave the panel clear where it is not.

When this is not the right box
Worth settling early, because two neighbouring jobs look similar and are not.
If the food is shared out at the table instead of portioned in advance, a platter or grazing format does that job, and Custom Food Boxes covers the range. One whole meal, not a share of one
A sandwich lunch is flat and stacks without thinking about it. A Christmas lunch rarely is. Something warm and deep, something dry that has to stay dry, and something sweet that must not be sat on.
Internal height gets set by the tallest item in the box and the footprint by the widest, so a box chosen on volume alone can be correct on paper and wrong on the table. Work from the actual plated meal, not from a litre figure.
An insert is die-cut to the measurements of what goes in it. Its job is holding each item where it was put. That earns its cost when something loose or dressed would otherwise travel across the box on the way to a venue. Where a meal is a single dish at a single height, there is nothing for a divider to hold apart, and a plain box at the right internal depth serves better.
Structure follows the handover. A tuck-top carton stacks densely and travels well in bulk. A gable or carry format is easier to pass to someone one at a time and easier to hold while finding a seat. Where the boxes are handed over decides this, and a rendering will not.
The hours between packing and eating
Boxes for a midday event are usually packed in the morning, which is a longer wait than most food packaging is asked to manage.
Two things happen in that gap. Warm food gives off moisture inside a closed box, and nothing in a packaging specification stops that happening. It is a reason to shorten the wait or vent the food before it goes in, and it is worth saying plainly because no board and no insert is going to manage it for you. Separately, the boxes are stacked, so whatever sits at the bottom carries everything above it, with board weight and structure changing how much that matters.
Heat is something to plan around, since no board on this page is doing anything about it. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. The full timeline to your door is confirmed with the quote rather than published, so ask for it against the event date while the artwork is still moving.
Then the event ends and every box becomes waste inside an hour, in one building, into whatever bins the venue happens to run. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Final recyclability depends on the full material and finishing specification and the facilities available locally. Where a venue or a client sets its own waste requirement, that belongs in the specification at the start, not in an apology afterwards.

Should the variant marker go on the lid or the side?
The lid, if the boxes are stacked and picked from the top, which is the usual case. The side if they are lined up in rows on a table. Both, if the same run gets used for a sit-down service and a grab-and-go table.
Can the boxes be printed on kraft or recycled board?
Yes, and both take print well. A brown or recycled stock changes how a festive palette reads, and a deep red behaves differently on it than on white. Pantone references and CMYK values can be used to manage colour consistency, subject to normal variation caused by the chosen board, ink, coating and production method.
How far ahead should the artwork be signed off?
Further ahead than the print itself needs. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. Approval is the part that slips, because dietary versions get added and menus get rewritten. Fix the variant list first and the rest of the schedule stops moving.
What is the minimum order for Christmas cardboard lunch boxes?
Orders start from 100 units. Order against the headcount plus a margin, since events reliably produce a few extra guests and a few dropped boxes.
