There’s no steam to vent and no grease to fight in a sushi box, which puts it at odds with almost every other takeaway container. Sushi is eaten cold, so the packaging’s real job is keeping the rice from drying out, keeping a soy sauce sachet from finding its way across the box, and stopping the rolls sliding into each other before the lid even comes off.
Why the lid matters more than a vent hole
Vinegared rice dries out and toughens quickly once exposed to air, so how well the lid seals matters more than how well it vents. Getting that right comes down to the fold and how closely the lid sits against the base once closed, a structural and closure detail rather than anything to do with coating.
Soy sauce, ginger and wasabi don’t stay where you put them
Loose sachets and small sauce tubs shift around in transit, and a leak from one can spread across everything else in the box. Die-cut inserts can hold sachets in their own compartment, separate from the rolls, so a split sachet stays contained instead of spreading. Fit is what actually makes the difference: an insert sized to the sachets you use holds them still, but nothing stops one that splits while pressed flat against the rice from marking it regardless.
Stopping the rolls sliding, and a window if the food should be seen
Rolls that shift during a short journey can end up squashed against the box wall or against each other. Cutting an insert to the actual roll count and layout gives each piece its own space, the same structural approach used to stop any product moving in transit. Where the food itself is the sell, a window lets a customer see the rolls before ordering or opening the lid, instead of guessing from a printed picture. Structurally, a window is just a cut aperture covered with a film patch, and it carries a small trade-off worth knowing: every opening in the lid is one more edge for moisture to find.
Food-contact suitability and where the responsibility sits
Board and coating can be selected to suit direct or indirect food contact depending on the specification. Food-contact material suitability is confirmed for the specific material before production. Allergen and nutritional labelling stays your business’s responsibility.
Where a sushi box stops and cold storage begins
This box covers the counter-to-plate stretch and nothing longer. Keeping sushi properly chilled beyond that is down to a refrigerated display or an insulated delivery bag on your end; that responsibility doesn’t transfer to the packaging itself.
Specifying the order
Orders start from 100 units. Design support is free. A digital 3D mock-up is free, so you can see the window placement, insert layout and print before anything goes to press. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free. There are no setup fees. An unlaminated paperboard construction may be easier to process through suitable paper-recycling streams than a heavily laminated alternative. Board that has been marked by soy sauce or a similar wet condiment may need to go into general waste rather than paper recycling at some facilities, so final recyclability depends on the full specification and what your local facility accepts.

Do sushi takeaway boxes need a window?
Not always. It earns its keep on a counter or display sale, where seeing the rolls before buying is part of what sells them; a pre-ordered delivery doesn't get that same benefit, and skipping the window means one fewer seam for moisture to work through. Tell us how the order is usually sold and we can advise either way.
Will soy sauce or ginger leak into the rice?
It can, if a sachet splits in transit. A divider keeps that risk lower by holding sachets away from where the rolls sit, but it isn't a guarantee. Tell us what condiments you usually include and we can plan the layout around them.
How many rolls or pieces fit in a box?
That depends on the roll size, cut and how many pieces you are packing per order, so tell us your usual serving and we can size an insert layout around it rather than guessing at a standard fit.
What is the minimum order for sushi takeaway boxes?
Orders start from 100 units. Standard production takes 6 to 8 business days after approval. UK delivery is free.
Will the box keep the sushi cold?
Only for the counter-to-plate stretch it's built for. Anything longer needs a refrigerated display or an insulated delivery bag doing the actual cooling.
Can I get a divider to stop the rolls sliding around?
Yes. Tell us how many rolls or pieces go in each box and roughly how they sit together, and we can cut an insert around that layout so nothing shifts loose on the journey.
